Specialist information

Psychotherapeutic care for the population is one of the main focuses of the Sigmund-Freud-Institute. Since 1960, our outpatient clinic has been the first facility in Frankfurt am Main to which patients with psychic and psychosomatic disorders as well as couples and families with relationship conflicts can turn.

Around 600 patients are treated in the psychoanalytic consultation hours of our outpatient clinic every year. They receive initial psychoanalytical consultations and advice from us, in which we clarify their problems, make diagnoses and suggest appropriate treatment methods. If there are no treatment options available at our institute, we support patients in their search for a suitable therapy place.

Selected cases are presented in an outpatient conference and the diagnosis and indication are discussed. After the conference, the patient is suggested a suitable form of therapy in further consultations and, if necessary, a therapy place with a therapist in private practice is arranged.

Clinical staff of the Institute, freelancers and selected training candidates are involved in the outpatient consultation hours. The Institute’s clinical staff are doctors and psychologists who have completed or will complete further training as psychoanalysts in accordance with the guidelines of the German and International Psychoanalytical Association and the regulations of the State Chamber of Physicians of Hesse and the Hesse State Chamber for Psychological Psychotherapists and Child and Adolescent Therapists.

The outpatient clinic has been recognized by the Hesse Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians for billing statutory health insurance companies since 1979.

Employees of the Institute and psychoanalysts in private practice conduct two quality circles at the Institute, which are recognized by the Hesse Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, on the following topics: ‚Questions of psychoanalytic diagnosis and therapy‘ and ‘Models and therapy of depressive disorders’.

We offer you

  • Initial psychoanalytic consultations in which we try to clarify your problems and make a diagnosis
  • Advice on a suitable form of treatment
  • Help in finding a place for therapy, as there are only very limited treatment options at the institute itself

Each consultation lasts 50 minutes (in accordance with the reimbursement procedure). We can refer patients to the following treatments in cooperation with established medical and psychological psychotherapists and in the knowledge that psychotherapy places are available:

  • Acute crisis intervention
  • Brief therapy
  • Focal therapy
  • Long-term psychoanalytical therapy with different hourly frequencies per week
  • Group or couples therapy

Our outpatient clinic is recognized by the Hesse Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians for billing statutory health insurance companies. The costs for initial consultations and treatment hours are covered by the statutory health insurance companies. Private health insurance companies and civil servants‘ allowances cover the costs of initial consultations and treatments in full or in part.

The agreed appointments are binding.
